“It’s a good and appropriate choice in a time when everything is grey, dark and gloomy, and a lot of people have lost hope,” James Fox, Cambridge art historian and author of The World According to Colour , told the Guardian . “It’s fundamentally a colour about the resilience of the human spirit.”
According to Fox , Magenta evokes clay, cave paintings, the colors of the galaxy, and primitive plants on Earth. Visually, this color creates a great vibration and cannot be precisely defined.

Pantone has chosen a color of the year every year for more than two decades. In 2016, Pantone chose a spectrum of two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity, to reflect a year defined by discussions about gender. In 2020, Pantone chose not one but two colors: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating as the colors of the year to represent both resilience and optimism in the first year of the pandemic.
In 2021, Pantone chose Very Peri as its color of the year - marking the first time a new color has been created as the color of the year rather than using an existing color.
