In a joint study by universities in Germany, Austria and the US, participants were put through an interesting experience. They were instructed to imagine they were shopping for a gift for a loved one. They were given a list of machine-made gift items to choose from: mugs, soap, women’s handbags , stationery, and nice clothes . They were then shown pictures of similar products, but this time handmade, some with little labels that said “This product is made with love for xxx”, others with cute hand-drawn hearts and kisses.

The results showed that respondents clearly preferred handmade products and were willing to pay 17% more than machine-made products.

They believe that the artisan who created the product has somehow conveyed a message of love to them. They feel the warmth and love from the product and want to convey what they feel to the person they give it to.

“Each handmade product contains and conveys the thoughts and feelings of the person who made it, which no machine can do. Those thoughts and feelings are conveyed into the product and from there gently convey to the consumer. Using a delicately sewn leather bag, you can feel how much effort and love the tailor puts into the product. You can imagine the scene, space and time the tailor sits diligently sewing each stitch, sewing over and over again, using a magnifying glass to check the sophistication of each detail to ensure perfection. You can feel how much the artisans love the products they make!” – Ms. Ai, a person passionate about handmade products, shared.

Huynh Yen, the leader of Hity’s hand-scissors cutting team, confided: “When cutting, I focus all my mind on the fabric, looking for the most beautiful way to cut out a shirt or a dress. I focus all my mind on each fashion product I cut. After cutting, I also check with the tailor to make sure that they sew every stitch meticulously. The beautiful clothes we sew must be complete, without any flaws or excess threads. Each shirt or pair of pants is a child that we take care of. If it is not beautiful, it is embarrassing. So I can’t give birth to many in a day :-)”
