Nam Cao linen is a famous traditional fabric of Nam Cao craft village, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh province. This is one of the oldest craft villages in Vietnam, where linen weaving has been preserved and developed for many generations. Nam Cao linen not only represents the ingenuity of Vietnamese craftsmen but also symbolizes rusticity, simplicity but sophistication.
The starting point of Nam Cao Silk
Nam Cao linen fabric is made from silk fibers, especially silk fibers from substandard silkworm cocoons to extract fine silk. The fabric production process requires carefulness and high skills, from fiber processing, spinning, to weaving. Each piece of fabric is meticulously made by the skillful hands of the artisans of Nam Cao Silk Cooperative, Thai Binh, diligently in a basin of water each day to only pull 70g - 100g of linen fibers... Through more than 15 stages and the time to create the product from growing mulberry, raising silkworms, weaving, dyeing the fabric takes about 60 days.
The main steps include:
Silk processing: Silkworm cocoons are boiled to obtain silk thread. This thread is usually thicker and coarser than pure silk.
Spinning: The linen fibers are drawn into thread and wound into spools ready for weaving.
-
Weaving: Artisans use traditional looms to weave fabrics, creating fabrics with a rustic yet sturdy surface.

Outstanding features of Nam Cao linen fabric
Rustic Aesthetics: Linen has a natural, sometimes slightly rough surface, creating a sense of closeness and simplicity and uniqueness.
Cool and light: The properties of linen fibers make the fabric very breathable, suitable for Vietnam's tropical climate. Absorbs sweat, but limits body odor. Cool in summer and warm in winter. Because silk fibers are 100% natural, they are extremely clean, have antibacterial properties, prevent skin irritation, and are especially suitable for the sensitive skin of young children.
-
Durable and Eco-Friendly: Linen is not only durable but also an organic product, completely natural and biodegradable. With proper care, linen silk fabric will last a lifetime.
