In the soft sunlight, the pink silk ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) exudes a dreamy yet modern aura. The light, shimmering silk fabric feels like a breath of air, gently touching the skin, leaving a feeling of softness yet full of vitality.

The pleated shoulder detail creates a unique and unconventional accent, subtly revealing a delicate charm on the shoulders. The combination of traditional top and modern trousers highlights a blend of beauty – where past and present coexist.

This is not just a fashion design, but a lifestyle: elegant yet unconstrained, feminine yet free. Wearing a pink silk ao dai, we dare to live with our softness, but are also strong enough to shine in our own way.

The Lemur ao dai was initiated by artist Nguyen Cat Tuong in 1934. The name Lemur ao dai is derived from his French name. Cat Tuong is considered the most daring innovator, incorporating approximately 30% Western elements into the ao dai. The dress has only two panels, front and back, and incorporates several features such as: no collar, short sleeves, sleeveless, puffed shoulders, dropped shoulders, flared cuffs, short front panels, and buttons that open to the side to emphasize femininity. Officially published in Phong Hoa magazine on March 23, 1934, the Lemur ao dai was designed based on the three-panel ao dai style that had existed before. The Lemur ao dai features a round or lotus-leaf collar, ruffles, or a wide neckline to expose the neck, and lace trim. The shoulders are puffed or sleeveless, and the back is open to the waist. The drawstring silk trousers are replaced with flared trousers with side buttons or a tie belt. The trousers were fitted from the hips to the knees, then flared out like a trumpet at the hem. In terms of color, he advocated abandoning the traditional dark brown. Lemur's ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) typically featured soft, elegant, and bright colors, reflecting the refined European aesthetic. For each style, he carefully noted the fabric type, weather conditions, and suitability for different skin tones and body types. Through each issue of the magazine, he guided women on how to dress fashionably and conveniently for daily life. To encourage this, he launched the "Healthy and Beautiful" women's movement, encouraging women nationwide to exercise and providing guidance on makeup. He also organized fashion shows across Vietnam, from North to South. Lemur's reforms to the ao dai truly opened a new chapter for modern ao dai, making it much more alluring and elegant. Lemur Nguyen Cat Tuong's greatest success was contributing to a change in the general aesthetic perception of women's clothing. Later, many artists continued to improve the ao dai, harmonizing it with traditional national styles to honor the graceful beauty of women. The ao dai gradually found its standard form as it is today.

Outfit suggestions:

  • Pair it with jeans or navy blue or orange flared trousers for a dynamic contrast, or with wide-leg silk trousers in white, cream, or fuchsia for a traditional and elegant look.

  • Pair it with minimalist accessories such as a silver necklace, pearl earrings, a delicate bracelet, and a pretty little handbag made from natural materials like straw or rattan.

  • Pointed-toe high heels, strappy sandals, or clogs are all suitable choices.
